Enterprise Architecture 84

Enterprise Architecture 84 (EA 84) is a proposed framework for designing and implementing digital services in the Government of Canada (GC). It is based on the principles and best practices of the GC Digital Standards, such as designing with users, iterating and improving frequently, using open standards and solutions, and collaborating widely.

EA 84 aims to address the challenges and opportunities of the digital transformation in the GC, such as reducing silos, aligning IT with business services, reusing common components, and improving service delivery to Canadians. EA 84 defines a model for the digital enablement of GC services that consists of five domains: business, information, application, technology, and security. Each domain has its own architecture framework, which specifies the criteria, guidelines, and standards for developing and reviewing digital initiatives.

EA 84 is an enabler for the Policy on Service and Digital, which sets out the direction and requirements for the GC’s digital transformation. The policy mandates that all GC departments and agencies adopt EA 84 as their enterprise architecture approach and align their digital initiatives with the Service and Digital Target Enterprise Architecture, which describes the desired state and transition plan for the GC enterprise ecosystem.

EA 84 is not a fixed or rigid framework, but rather a flexible and adaptable one that evolves with the changing needs and expectations of the users and stakeholders. EA 84 encourages innovation and experimentation, while ensuring coherence and interoperability across the GC enterprise ecosystem.

EA 84 is influenced by and aligned with other enterprise architecture frameworks, such as TOGAF® Standard, which
