Leadership and management

People often mistakenly equate leadership with management, but there are fundamental differences between the two; they are separate and distinct skill sets. Management involves a focus on executing functions, whereas leadership is about motivating people. In fact, you don’t have to have the title of manager or have direct reports to be a leader.

The virtual Leadership and Management for Nurses Program is open to all RPNs, RNs and NPs in managerial roles in an Ontario hospital or long-term care home. The program enhances key knowledge and skills to achieve goals, support shared decision-making and create healthy work environments and team functioning.

Emphasizes value and business culture match In his 1989 book, On Becoming a Leader, Warren Bennis made the distinction that while management is about doing things right, leadership is about doing the right things. The analysis is still rather fitting, as management’s focus is task-oriented and result driven.
